Kids With Colds, Allergies and Asthma All Winter and a Moldy Basement? Dehumidify Your Basement!

What does a mold, musty basement have to do with asthma, colds and respiratory conditions? Mold exposure can cause asthma. Mold loves to hang out in the basement especially if fed with moisture, darkness and warmth. Once the door opens those pesky mold spores escape into the rest of your home looking for upholstered furniture, rugs and anything porous. Basement mold is emerging as the source of many major health problems; a serious concern for public health officials; especially in how mold has a part in upper respiratory conditions. Let's throw a few other conditions that go with upper respiratory infections from mold exposure for your information: sinus congestion, headaches, body aches, cognitive problems like having a hard time finishing sentences, and more serious problems like pulmonary edema, emphysema and even death. So your moldy basement over the long run can become a real health issue.

Since 1 out 2 homes/buildings have mold, chances are your basement and parts of your home have mold. If you do not dehumidify your basement, it is moldy. Most mold, asthma and allergy patients react to mold. What is the solution? The most important step in fighting mold is to dehumidify your basement with a dehumidifier for basement. To dehumidify your basement lowers humidity so mold and dirt mites cannot grow. Dirt mites also love moisture and are a common allergen. Pitch porous things like cardboard boxes, wood, clothes left in basement for extended periods of time, carpeting, etc..

Clean every surface with a mild detergent or purchase mold removal products. Close off the area so more mold spores do not escape with plastic taped over the doors. You can find mold removal products that kill mold instantly. If you have an asthmatic do not use bleach because it will irritate the lungs.

Buy and run a mold air purifier in the basement. Mold air purifiers actively kill mold and freshen the air. Indoor air pollution also irritates the lungs of the asthma, mold and allergic patients. Take care of both concerns with one shot. Mold air purifiers also work to remove organic contaminants and many chemicals. Organic contaminants are important which are; germs, bacteria, viruses, fungi (mold). Organic contaminants feed the possibility of the asthmatic developing pneumonia. If you smoke, do it outside. There are 4,000 chemicals once the cigarette is lit. Smoking along with mold is a double whammy; both are causes and irritants of asthma patients.

Sounds like a lot of work. But in the end giving your family the gift of a healthy home will lessen asthma attacks, lessen cold frequency and help with allergies. Live healthy... Be happy.
