Preventive Measures and Cures Sinus Infections

If you are suffering from severe cough and it does not seem to end, despite of your attempts to cure it with medicines, then it may be sinusitis. This is a disorder caused due to inflammation in the sinuses. Even simple sinus inflammations should not be neglected, as this throbbing malady often comes with a harmful infection. Sinus infections are of two types, chronic and acute sinusitis.

Acute sinusitis usually lasts lesser than four to five weeks and it often begins with common cold which turns into an extremely excruciating bacterial infection.

The condition worsens when the nose gets totally blocked because of cold and it becomes difficult to drain out the mucus. This further allows bacteria to increase, beginning from nose to throat and subsequently causes acute sinus infections. Apart from this, acute sinusitis is also caused because of allergies that you may suffer from several irritants like pollutants, pollen etc. Treatments, which can relieve the symptoms of acute sinusitis may include use of vaporizers, decongestants, pain relievers, anti-allergy medications and antibiotics. Besides these, salty nasal spray is also proved to be quite effective in this regard.

However, quite the opposite of acute sinusitis; chronic sinusitis is usually recurrent and lasts longer. This condition leads to thickening of the mucus membrane because of inflammation. The main cause of this condition is usually unknown. However, most of the patients suffering from this ordeal either have allergies or asthma, making them vulnerable to this disorder. If you are frequently being exposed to several allergens, then the likelihood of developing chronic sinusitis increases. Some of the allergens that may turn out to be one of the causes of this agonizing condition include mites, pets, mold, cockroaches, house dust etc. The other causes include cystic fibrosis, immune deficiency, structural abnormalities or deviated septum.

Besides these, antibiotics, steroids, saline washes and sprays are some of the commonly used treatments for relieving sinusitis cough and nasal blockage. However, when these treatments fail to give any relief, then a surgical sinus treatment might be required. Apart from these cures, there are also some preventive measures to combat sinus infections that can be taken by making some simple lifestyle adjustments. For instance, one should avoid excessive exposure to smoke, chemicals or other irritants, avoid swimming inside the chlorinated swimming pools for too long. Water diving and air travel are a few more things that must be avoided especially if you are an asthma patient. Lastly, maintaining good eating habits and avoiding foods which may lead to allergic reactions is also an excellent sinus home remedy.
