Allergic Rhinitis - Prevention and Treatment With Home Remedies

Allergic rhinitis symptoms

When you have a runny nose, sneeze often, and your eyes are weeping and itching, it means you have allergic rhinitis symptoms, an affection triggered by exposure to an allergen (pollen, dust etc.). You can take measures to avoid exposure, and with the help of natural remedies, you can temporarily relieve the suffering, but the best way to increase your endurance is to strengthen your immune system.

The allergic symptoms are similar to those of common cold, but are not produced by a virus. They are an inappropriate immune system response to an otherwise harmless substance, which is treated like a dangerous offender and thus causes inflammation and irritation. The most common form is the seasonal allergic rhinitis, which is also called hay fever or pollen allergy. The main culprits are tree pollen in spring, grass in summer and weeds in fall. If you have allergies to many types of pollen, symptoms may last several months a year. Perennial allergic rhinitis symptoms, which persist the whole year, are triggered by factors such as mold, animal hair and skin, dust mites, certain foods and toxins

Allergic rhinitis prevention

Help your immune system by eating healthy, consuming plenty of aliments rich in vitamins B and C, as well as in flavonoids. Vitamin C supplements can be useful.

Seasonal allergic rhinitis

Pollen particles are so numerous and tiny that it's difficult to totally avoid them; you can yet reduce the impact of exposure to them. You should take the following measures in those three months that precede the time when hay fever usually begins:

  • Eat a teaspoon of unheated raw honey, which contains wax caps from combs. It is believed that this remedy strengthens the resistance to local pollens.

  • Drink daily, a mug of echinacea or ginseng tea to strengthen your immune system.

Allergic rhinitis treatment

General measures

  • Wet your face or wash it frequently to remove the pollen from your skin and the eye area.

  • Against itching and weeping eyes, wash them with 1/2 liter of cold water after it was boiled, in which you added a pinch of salt or two teaspoons of distilled witch hazel. Use the same thing for inflamed nostrils.

Painful nostrils

Protect your nostrils from nasal secretion moistness by anointing them with Vaseline. Reduce the already existent inflammation of the nostrils by dabbing the area with a cotton handkerchief dipped in chamomile tea.
